For Councillor and Mayor

Clare's vision for a thriving Kingborough

A thriving economy

Local Business

I will encourage new businesses to open in Kingborough. With council I want to explore ways to showcase new and existing businesses through improved dialogue with the community and business enterprise centre, via events, meetings, newsletters and social media. As a local small business owner, I’m highly conscious of the needs of our local businesses.

Commercial Composting Facility

Our community will greatly benefit from our very own commercial composting facility here in Kingborough. I will initiate an investigation of its viability. Such an operation can be a profitable venture, environmentally sound, and is worthy of consideration for our own municipality.

Rates capped at CPI

It is apparent to me that the yearly council budget is not enough to meet our needs and desires. I do NOT believe it is fair to raise more funds by raising rates. I understand the financial pressures placed on us as the cost of living increases. I stand by capping rates at the Consumer Price Index.

However......

I want to see our council become more profitable so we can fund more projects and services. I will work hard at:

  • Investigating the feasibility of Council investment in ventures that return a profit
  • Advocating for a statewide approach to increased developer contributions
  • Exploring crowdfunding opportunities
  • Elevating our grant potential

Thriving people

Pedestrian and Cycle Linkages

I acknowledge the recent petitions and concerns of those calling for better and safer pedestrian and cycle linkages in our community. I vision a link from Taroona all the way to Snug. If elected I will get behind these issues that I see as essential to a thriving community.

Urgent Care Center

Many parents I have spoken with want a 24-hour medical centre here in Kingborough. Urgent medical care centres can deal with non-life-threatening urgent conditions; this local solution will ease pressure on the Royal Hobart Hospital, and be more accessible to us as a community. If elected I will lobby the State Government for funding for these facilities.

Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion

As a long-time Kingborough resident, I want to know more about our local traditional culture. If elected I will engage with the South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation and seek to raise respect for Muwinina culture in our community.

Community Collaboration

I believe the role of the council is to collaborate with the community, therefore, the Mayor needs to be accessible and approachable. I would introduce Mayor in the Chair, an excellent initiative by Hobart’s Lord Mayor, Anna Reynolds. This is a monthly opportunity for community members to sit and have a chat with the Mayor. I have a plan for more public events including cultural events, film screenings, and festive season celebrations such as the Christmas Carols.

Social Inclusion and Ageing

There are many in our community who battle against immense barriers to employment: disability and culturally and linguistically diverse people. I’m inspired by the social enterprise in Hobart called Hamlet Café. It employs such individuals so as to provide training and boost their skills, experience, and confidence. I would like to see our council operate or support an enterprise of this nature in our own municipality. Additionally, if elected I will work with the organisations that support dementia-friendly communities to improve their standing in Kingborough.

Endorse PMAT

Planning is a complex issue and as such, I endorse the hard work by Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania to address planning challenges with the aim to better the lives of Tasmanians. It is fair to say we need to balance the need for more affordable housing with sensitive development.

Increased Services and Facilities

If elected I will lobby for increased police presence in our growing community. A 24-hour Police Station will serve us well and is long overdue. As for a Public Swimming Pool and Cinema, yes please Kingborough! If elected I will encourage operators to consider our region for these facilities.

My Position on Dogs

I understand the great joy and comfort dogs provide to many in our community. I also understand the responsibility of dog ownership. I will always support providing suitable, safe and sufficient exercise areas, and support the dedicated greyhound off-leash locations.

A thriving environment

Public Transport

With 8000+ commuters traveling to Hobart each day and very uninviting public transport, we end up with a congested bottleneck problem! While this is a State Government issue, I want to see our Council work more effectively with them to deliver a better public transport system. I have a viable business case for an Electric Shuttle Bus Service that is worthy of investigation. With major advances in e-bikes and e-scooters, we should be considering dedicated cycleways. If elected I will push for better decisions on how we use our State Government funding to address this issue.

Campaign Material

I have heard the community loud and clear when it comes to campaign “junk mail”. I have therefore made a conscious decision not to letterbox drop. Please help me by sharing my website and social media page. 🙏 I will turn my campaign corflute signs into tree guards when I have finished using them and will donate them to local Landcare groups. If you would like to support my campaign by displaying a yard sign please get in touch. 🙏

FOGO in Public Spaces

I am aware of the huge problem of compostable packaging ending up in either landfill or recycling bins, and neither of these is the right place for this waste. My vision is to provide FOGO bins in public spaces so that we can be environmentally sensible in our community.

Climate Change Policy

I hear many in the community want the Kingborough Climate Change Plan funded. Current estimates suggest it is under-resourced by 90%. I would like to explore the viability of employing a dedicated Climate Change Officer to facilitate and complete the actions in the Climate Change Plan. These include energy and greenhouse gas targets, climate change adaptation planning and community resilience, and coastal hazards management. If elected I will encourage our council to investigate the feasibility of crowd-funding this plan so those who want to contribute, may.

“What sets me apart from other candidates, whom are mostly career politicians, is that I can bring a fresh face and new set of eyes to the decision making for our community
